A youth soccer game in Tucson, Arizona, has ignited widespread condemnation after a local parent reported her 9-year-old son endured a racial slur during a match versus Spartans FC.
The claim emerged when Jessika Graham, a member of the Arizona Soccer Moms and Dads Facebook group, shared a detailed account of the distressing event.
In her post, Graham conveyed profound sadness and fury that her young child faced racism during what ought to have been an ordinary soccer contest. Graham ,
“I’m NEVER one to post, yet my son participated against Spartans FC today in Tucson AZ and two children uttered the N-word toward him,” “This conduct is utterly revolting and must never be tolerated or excused!!! I feel devastated, enraged, repulsed, and wounded that my 9-year-old endured this at all—let alone during a simple soccer match!!!!”
Her statement resonated deeply with parents, coaches, and referees who responded with empathy and exasperation.
Numerous accounts described parallel incidents at games involving Spartans FC and other teams, highlighting systemic issues in handling discriminatory behavior within youth sports.
Many urged Graham to promptly submit a formal complaint to the ASA, emphasizing their commitment to upholding strict anti-bullying protocols.
A commenter, Nathan Everingham, even supplied the ASA’s official reporting portal, urging submission of evidence like video footage.
Others, including paren, outlined prior steps taken in comparable scenarios: alerting officials, notifying opposing coaches, and reaching out to tournament administrators.
Akinduro expressed sympathy: “I’m sorry your son endured this. My sons faced similar challenges repeatedly.” Regrettably, such incidents appear inevitable.
Several contributors voiced doubts about whether authorities take these matters seriously enough.
A parent recounted submitting a report following an alleged coach’s physical aggression and verbal abuse, only to receive no reply from ASA.
Another noted referees often ignore claims unless they personally witness the slur, per a witness statement. An anonymous user shared: “I’ve witnessed this repeatedly. Our team’s child suffered similar treatment last year. Referees dismissed it due to lack of direct evidence, and follow-ups yielded only hollow apologies.” Anonymous Participant
Multiple parents and officials also criticized Spartans FC’s history of unsportsmanlike conduct.
One referee claimed they’d suspended more Spartans FC personnel than any other club for misconduct. Another described playing against them: “Players engaged in provocation, fields were hazardous, and debris like glass and waste littered sidelines.” While demanding accountability, others extended solidarity to Graham and her family.
Kimberly Bailey advised teaching resilience: “That word holds no power over your son’s spirit. Their use reveals their moral bankruptcy—they seek to undermine him. Let it fuel his determination instead. Never grant them control. Stay blessed.”
