Gavin Thigh, a standout student-athlete at Lower Brule High School, passed away unexpectedly, leaving a profound void in his family and community. With over 1,000 career points and a 92-yard touchdown sprint under his belt, his athletic prowess was matched only by his character.
Born into a family deeply rooted in sports—his father Russell Ronald Thigh excelled in basketball and softball—Gavin embraced athletics from a young age. Despite becoming paralyzed in an accident, he remained a pillar of strength for his loved ones and the local community.

His journey included stints with the Lower Brule Boys Varsity Football Team (2019–2026) as a wide receiver and cornerback, wearing jersey #5, and the GAFC Gyor Sharks Football Club (2018–2026), where his agility and dedication shone. On the basketball court, he donned jersey #5 as a guard, known for his quick reflexes and unwavering commitment.
Graduating with the Class of 2026, Gavin’s impact extended beyond stats. He embodied resilience, often recalling, “You never grow up here, but when I brought my kids, you made us feel welcome. Grab a rii and enjoy the moment.” His heartfelt words and presence left indelible marks on all who knew him.
