A Heartfelt Farewell to John "Aldo" Lyons: A Glamorgan Wanderers Legend

The Passing of Glamorgan Wanderers Icon John Lyons: A Community in Mourning

The rugby world and local community are grieving the sudden loss of John “Aldo” Lyons, a cherished former Chairman and devoted supporter of Glamorgan Wanderers RFC.

The tragic incident occurred on September 25th when Lyons was involved in a road traffic accident while returning from a bike ride in Cardiff.

Born at Mostyn High School, John’s life was defined by family bonds, camaraderie, and an unshakable passion for rugby. Known affectionately as “Aldo,” he excelled both on and off the field—playing, coaching, and leading with unwavering dedication.

As Team Manager and later Chairman, Lyons became synonymous with excellence, offering guidance, encouragement, and infectious enthusiasm to teammates and staff alike. His legacy transcended sport; he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of strength for all who knew him.

“John had this remarkable ability to rally people during tough times,” shared a club member. “When challenges arose, he’d lift everyone up and push forward together.”

Beyond rugby, John’s warmth shone through his generosity and humor. Family and friends recall him as a devoted husband to Mel, a loving father to Sarah and Paul, and a grandfather to Evie, Ralphie, and Jacob. His absence leaves a void no words can fill.

Paul Lyons, his son, expressed profound sorrow: “Losing my father feels like losing my best friend and hero. My mother has lost her soulmate. I promise to care for Mum and Sarah as best I can.” Wendy Underhill, a close friend, echoed the sentiment: “An absolute legend. Our hearts are shattered—life will never be the same.”

John’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the Glamorgan Wanderers RFC and community for their outpouring of support. His memory will endure through the values he instilled and the lives he touched.

May his spirit continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike. Rest in peace, John “Aldo” Lyons.
