Josie Aslakson’s path to Paralympic glory began with extraordinary challenges. Born September 14, 1995, her life changed forever at five after a severe accident left her wheelchair-bound.
What could have derailed her dreams instead became the launchpad for resilience.
How Theodore And Becky Aslakson Ignited Her Basketball Passion
The journey started when young Josie encountered wheelchair basketball during an archery session at Minneapolis’ Courage Center.
"Our coach saw potential and urged her to join," recall Theodore. "She tried it immediately—and never stopped playing."
From then on, Theodore and Becky Aslakson dedicated themselves completely—transporting gear, attending events, cheering loudest at every match.
They transformed obstacles into opportunities, ensuring Josie had all tools for success.
Josie flourished at Jordan High School before joining UT Arlington’s Lady Movin’ Mavs. Later, NYU became her academic home, blending athletics with storytelling studies.
Her relentless drive paid off: representing Team USA across multiple Paralympic cycles, winning medals from silver to bronze.
Now coaching Arizona’s women’s wheelchair team, Josie continues uplifting others through sport.
"These medals? They’re ours," she says. "Every triumph shares our story."
