The Mercer Volleyball community is grieving the loss of sophomore student-athlete Aliyah "Ali" Waldon, who bravely battled bone cancer before passing away.

"Our hearts are heavy tonight as the entire Mercer community mourns Aliyah "Ali" Waldon," shared the team on social media, expressing profound sorrow.

"Ali was an extraordinary teammate, daughter, and friend whose presence brightened every moment at Hawkins Arena," the post continued. "Her journey united us all in strength and hope."

At just 19 years old, Aliyah excelled as a Division I volleyball player at Mercer University while pursuing a psychology degree with aspirations to support traumatized youth.

Her life took a tragic turn when unexplained hip pain led to a diagnosis of osteosarcoma—a rare, aggressive bone cancer. Despite exhaustive treatments including chemotherapy and surgery preparations, her fight ended unexpectedly.

Coach Chad Sutton and teammates wore "Fight" shirts adorned with yellow ribbons symbolizing hope amidst her treatment journey.

"Ali returned home to Macon for support even while undergoing treatment, proving her loyalty and unbreakable spirit," shared Julie Rodgers, Aliyah's mother.

Family members echoed their grief: "Aliyah's spirit will forever inspire us. Though her time was brief, her impact was eternal," said uncle TJ Waldon.

Colleagues across collegiate sports offered heartfelt tributes. Western Carolina University extended deepest sympathies to the Mercer family and community.

"Ali was a warrior—her courage touched us all. We pray for peace as we honor her extraordinary life," shared friend Peter Kotsovolos.

Aliyah’s legacy lives on through shared memories of her vibrant personality and relentless determination both on and off the court.

The Mercer Volleyball team encourages supporters to keep the Waldon family in their prayers during this difficult period.

"Aliyah will be remembered as a beloved daughter, teammate, friend, and champion whose influence transcended the sport," the team stated.
