Robert D. “Jake” Baer, a proud United States Army veteran, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on Wednesday, September 24, 2026.

He shared his life with his wife Joanne Baer and raised four children: Bob, Jayme, Rhonda Kay, and Bobby Joe Baer.

Jake excelled as an athlete, leading Van Wert County in basketball scoring during the 1951 season.

His career spanned over three decades as a skilled carpenter at Tuttle Construction in Lima, earning respect for his craftsmanship and integrity. His military background, including service in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955, shaped his core values of dedication and loyalty.

Active in the Van Wert American Legion, Jake carried his military pride throughout life. His enduring legacy reflects quiet strength and dependability.

Robert D. “Jake” Baer, son of Glenn and Annetta Upp, born January 21, 1933, in Van Wert, Ohio, stood as a cornerstone for all who knew him.

He departed this world at 92, leaving behind a profound legacy of love and service.

Jake cherished simple joys and steadfast relationships.

As a devoted father and grandfather, his heart swelled watching family members excel in sports and daily life.

He found joy in community gatherings and quiet mornings at The Orchard Tree restaurant.

Surviving family includes children Bob Baer and Jayme Bohyer, grandchildren Blake and Karly Bohyer, siblings Donald “Murph” Baer and Charles Baer, sister NaDonna Schumm, and companion Donna Smith.

Preceded by parents, spouse Joanne, children, siblings, and numerous relatives, Jake’s life remains intertwined with countless lives touched by his presence.

He is also survived by a network of loved ones, including a half-sister and beloved friends.

Robert D. “Jake” Baer and Joanne Baer built a family rooted in love, beginning with their marriage in 1956 and continuing through five children and generations.

Joanne passed away in 2006 at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio.

The Baer family invites all to honor Jake with quiet reflection or participation in the scheduled funeral services on October 1, 2026.

Burial will take place at Ridge Cemetery with honors from the Van Wert American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.

Visitation is open from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the day of services.
