Reports indicate that Matt succumbed to colon cancer following a prolonged and valiant struggle with illness.

According to spouse Amy, Matt underwent multiple medical interventions including two surgical procedures and eight rounds of chemotherapy.

His passing has created an irreplaceable emptiness within his family, peer network, and community.

Supporters are expressing their admiration and offering comfort to those mourning his loss.

Smith initiated his sporting journey early, excelling in baseball at both Saint Elizabeth's High School and Ursinus College.

He then committed nearly three decades to guiding student-athletes at Saint Mark's High School.

Hired in 1992 as an educator and coach, Smith swiftly advanced to head baseball coach in 1998, steering Spartan squads to ten state titles and 383 victories across his tenure.

Nine of his trainees joined Major League Baseball, with one advancing to the Phillies' minor league roster.

In 2011, Smith assumed the role of Athletic Director, supervising all athletic programs while mentoring youth through camps and DIAA partnerships.

Recognition for his contributions included being crowned Delaware's Premier High School Baseball Coach in 2026 and inducted into the Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame the same year.

Smith's extraordinary contributions and compassionate spirit will remain eternally treasured.

Survived by his spouse of twenty-five years, Amy Trees Smith; daughter Olivia Smith; son Ryan Smith and extended family.
