A solitary social media message not only terminated Sterling Carvalho’s distinguished coaching tenure but also sparked a protracted judicial dispute as he persists in defending his reputation and seeking redress.

Carvalho served as the head football coach at Kahuku High & Intermediate School in Hawai‘i from 2018 until his dismissal in 2026, achieving a remarkable 59–18 win-loss record and guiding the squad to three straight state titles beginning in 2026.

March 2026 saw a critical moment when Tavian “Manoa” Hallums’ father published a scathing critique of Coach Carvalho online.

—K Sterling Carvalho… a questionable individual—had I understood your tactics, I would never have enrolled Manoa

He alleged that Carvalho had mistreated his son and had unfairly benched him during a crucial playoff match.

This post rapidly spread among Kahuku’s football community.

Following this, Carvalho arranged a confidential meeting with Manoa inside the school’s weight room.

Per Manoa’s account, Carvalho urged him to publicly endorse his coach by making a statement that conflicted with his father’s claims.

Carvalho reportedly told him,

Support your head coach or you’re not truly committed to the team.

Though Carvalho admitted meeting with Manoa, he denied any intention to intimidate, explaining he aimed to shield his player from potential team fallout during a turbulent period.

Nonetheless, the state Department of Education launched its own investigation and ultimately removed Carvalho from coaching duties on March 31, 2026.

The Court Rejects Sterling Carvalho’s Request to Resume Coaching at Kahuku

Carvalho responded by initiating litigation in July 2026 against the DOE, Superintendent Keith Hayashi, the overseeing area superintendent, and both Manoa and his father.

His legal claims centered on wrongful dismissal, breach of contract, and defamation.

Additionally, he sought a court directive reinstating him ahead of Kahuku’s 2026 season opener scheduled for August 9.

He emphasized that his lawsuit aims to …

He reiterated that his conduct stemmed from miscommunication rather than malice, stating:

My goal is simply to serve, uplift the youth, and uphold integrity.

While expressing sorrow over possible misinterpretations, he firmly denied any intent to bully or threaten.

On August 1, 2026, a judge refused his motion for immediate injunctive relief, concluding he failed to demonstrate either probable success or irreparable harm.

The lawsuit remains active as proceedings continue.

Carvalho and counsel affirm their commitment to pressing forward with the case pending resolution.
