Buford, Georgia Softball Coach and Former Baseball Player Darrell McManus Passes Away unexpectedly at 47, leaving behind his wife Spring and four Daughters

Darrell Ray McManus, 47, the Softball and Baseball Coach, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
Born June 27, 1978, Darrell lived with purpose and simplicity. Family was his top priority. He dedicated himself to hands-on work, raised his children, coached baseball, and mentored those in need.
He acquired plumbing skills through his job, later collaborating with Jammy Roberts on construction projects, and most recently served as a maintenance technician at MUSC—Lancaster.
Colleagues recall a dependable individual who fixed issues quietly and effectively without seeking recognition.
As a standout pitcher at Buford High School, Darrell led his team to state championships in 1994 and 1996.
He remained active in open league softball and coached whenever possible.
Friends and Former Students share heartfelt memories of Darrell
His coaching philosophy emphasized humility, diligence, and letting performance speak for itself. This approach earned widespread admiration from both peers and players.
"Some of my best memories of DMac are on a softball field," shared Lindsay Johnson. "When I stepped up to bat, I’d glance at D and remind him to be on third—I was sprinting, and he needed to be ready to instruct. He’d laugh and nod."
Johnson recalls witnessing Darrell make an impressive catch from deep center field, remarking, "An absolute ace. One of the finest athletes I ever knew."
Friends and classmates responded swiftly to the news. Evans Darrell expressed, "The Buford community lost a remarkable man. Please keep the McManus family in your thoughts and prayers."
Amanda McAteer Hartley remembered informal gatherings, hunting excursions, and casual dinners at the local diner where Darrell often appeared. She encouraged the family to find solace in faith and community support.

I first met Darrell during high school, and over the years, I grew close to his family through softball events with his daughters. He was truly exceptional. Wishing Spring strength and comfort during this difficult period. Our hearts go out to you all. May God bless."
April Allen added, "My prayers are with you all now. Spring, the girls, and I always viewed you as family both on and off the field. We’re truly heartbroken by Darrell’s loss. Sending our love to you all. Warm wishes from Harlie and Karlie Allen."
Other tributes described him as a passionate athlete and a remarkable person. Crystal Jewett wrote, "Thoughts and prayers for the McManus family."
April Carne shared, "My classmate! He stood out both on and off the field. ‘Kitty loves you’—your words brought tears to my eyes."
Beyond athletics, Darrell cherished nature, history, fishing, hunting, and storytelling. His curiosity about historical topics stemmed from Ms. Smith at Buford High School. His household reflected his affection for animals and rural life, housing goats, cows, chickens, horses, a mule, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, and hermit crabs. He aimed to teach responsibility through animal care.
Those who knew him describe a blend of resilience and compassion. He instilled values of hard work, loyalty, and humility in his children. He honored military service and modeled integrity and accountability.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 10, 2026, at The Chapel of Burgess Funeral Home. The service will be led by brother-in-law James West, followed by a reception at the funeral home.
