Greenup County Schools, especially McKell Elementary, face scrutiny after claims of child maltreatment, oversight lapses, and institutional secrecy.
Local residents and online commentators claim administrators, from educators to superintendents, neglected fundamental safeguarding duties.
The scandal involves multiple McKell Elementary pupils, including five nonverbal boys, who endured physical and psychological harm at the hands of trusted staff.
Staff members such as Michael Lyons, Mackenzie Rice, Ashley Trissler, and Faith Jordan have been explicitly implicated.
Higher-level personnel, including Special Education Director Melissa Latimer,, Vice Principal Victoria "Vicky" Wireman, Principal Tiffani Underwood, and Superintendent Traysea Moresea, are accused of ignoring warning signs.
Per Emily Campbell's account, music instructor Emily Spears, speech therapists Melissa Jaco and Bethany Meadows allegedly overlooked indicators of abuse.
Families also allege a school liaison was deployed not to safeguard victims, but to intimidate parents during initial discussions about these issues.
Teachers, including Michael Lyons, Mackenzie Rice, Ashley Trissler, and Faith Jordan, have been directly named. (Source: )Some guardians reported the board consistently dismissed them from meetings citing "full capacity," yet held gatherings in spaces accommodating merely 25 chairs.
Donna Hall Tavis, owner of Tavis Crafts, shared via official channel, "I attended the Greenup County School Board meeting recently to voice concerns regarding 19 days and 1188 instances of mistreatment in McKell Elementary's special needs classroom last autumn, seeking assurances preventing recurrence. Tripp wasn't present then—he enjoyed popularity as mayor—but this year's new educator, aide, and therapist remain unknown. The same individuals who hired alleged perpetrators now continue hiring them. When Sarah and Jeff attended meetings, questions were addressed openly. Now? Silence. Five voices spoke; mine last. Despite numerous queries, none received answers. My sole inquiry: 'What purpose do classroom cameras serve without active monitoring?' No reply (though Lance smiled at me throughout). Perhaps this reflects modern norms—I hope board members deliberate these matters publicly and enact reforms. Community vigilance remains essential.'
Alice Jean Spears,
Greenup resident, stated, "Attend a board session to witness 5-6 individuals responsible for staff oversight and children's welfare showing zero concern for McKell's five nonverbal boys. Daily abuse occurred—physical violence, emotional distress, forced affection. With legal presence, someone should have empathized. At minimum, reassurance needed. Instead, they dismissed concerns, shifting focus to handbook reviews."
Emily Campbell also noted recent arrests involving two adult male coaches Matt Miller and Michael Lyons for misconduct with minors; Miller imprisoned, Lyons awaiting trial. She cited Greenup County's 2024 cheerleader suicide linked to unaddressed harassment. Community pressure mounts for state intervention due to alleged board negligence—restricted access, possible footage deletion—eroding public confidence.
Social media users echo Campbell's sentiments. Jessica Bennett from Mainstream Hair Company wrote:
One speech therapist I witnessed is exceptional; we cherish her contributions.
Holly Rhea, Community Action Kentucky staff member, recalled: "Bullying persists—my brother exited McKell Middle post-mom obtaining restraining order against educator abusing students with pencils. Records confirm systemic protection attempts dating back nearly two decades. Minimal progress."
