Remembering John Lentz: A Pillar of Lenoir-Rhyne Basketball

John Lentz, the esteemed former head coach of Lenoir-Rhyne men's basketball, passed away at 73, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and unforgettable memories.

An iconic figure in the school's athletic history, Lentz earned recognition as SAC Coach of the Year five times during his illustrious career.

His journey began in Willingboro, New Jersey, where he attended Lenoir-Rhyne University as a standout student-athlete from 1970 to 1974, excelling as a point guard and setting records that still stand today.

After graduating, Lentz remained deeply connected to the sport, eventually taking the helm as head coach in 1986—a role he held for 29 seasons, guiding the team to 432 victories and numerous accolades, including multiple South Atlantic Conference championships.

His dedication earned him the school's all-time assist record (524) and a place among its top scorers (1,755 points), cementing his status as a cornerstone of the program.

Beyond the court, Lentz's influence extended to the community, with his name immortalized in Shuford Arena and his induction into both Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba County Sports Halls of Fame.

The university invites fans and former players to honor his memory at a Celebration of Life event on December 21, 2026, fostering connection and remembrance for all who cherished his guidance.

Rest in peace, Coach Lentz—your spirit lives on in every bounce of the ball and every cheer from the stands.
