He earned his degree from Oklahoma Panhandle State University before dedicating himself to youth football coaching in Choctaw and Guthrie, Oklahoma.
His coaching extended to guiding first-grade Little League players.

He predeceased by his brother Wilford Gatson, and parents Leo Gatson Sr. and Dortheir Allen Gatson.
