Mattviel "Chubby" Rodriguez, an 8-year-old Rhinos Baseball participant, tragically lost his life following an electric scooter collision in Chula Vista, California, on July 13, 2026.

Per Chula Vista Police records, Mattviel operated a standing electric scooter within the Otay Ranch residential area when struck by a vehicle around 2 p.m.

Bystanders including Norliza Rodriguez and her spouse utilized a hydraulic lifting device to raise the automobile and rescue him. Despite emergency interventions, he was declared dead at Rady Children's Medical Center.

Substances weren't involved in the incident, yet authorities continue investigating while the involved motorist—an adult male from the same housing complex—is assisting authorities.

Coach Miguel Ponce conveyed profound distress regarding the news: "Upon learning yesterday evening around 6 p.m., we received devastating news about Chubby's accident-related fatality. Such grief defies comprehension."

Miguel Ponce immediately traveled to the hospital where he shared emotional reflections with NBC 7: "Anger, sorrow, confusion—how could this happen to a child? No youngster should face such loss; Chubby's passing left deep wounds."

Ponce explained the team's intention to commemorate Mattviel through a ceremonial pitch and custom jerseys during his anticipated first game on July 18, 2026, emphasizing the significance of honoring his memory.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after Chula Vista City Council enacted regulations limiting child-operated electric mobility devices, pending further approval. A donation initiative now supports Rodriguez family funeral costs. Parents remain private amidst mourning. Our deepest sympathies extend to relatives, mentors, and community members enduring this hardship.

Rest in Peace, Mattviel Rodriguez!
