Paul Trowbridge Gillespie Jr., a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and a celebrated college football player, passed away on September 5, 2026. His passing has deeply affected his family, friends, and community.
Though the circumstances surrounding his death remain private, many have come forward to honor his memory and celebrate his remarkable life.

Trow Gillespie’s athletic prowess earned him acclaim during his high school and collegiate years, laying the foundation for a lifetime of achievement.
As captain and quarterback, he guided his team to numerous victories, embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork.
Though he did not pursue professional athletics, Trow remained devoted to Memphis University School, serving three decades on the Board of Trustees, including a term as chairman.
He co-founded Southeastern Asset Management in 1975, holding key roles such as vice president and secretary before establishing NewSouth Capital Management in 1985, where he led as president until his passing.
Family and Legacy
Trow is remembered lovingly by his wife, Elizabeth Johnston Gillespie, and their three sons—Paul III, John Marston, and Stuart Johnston—each carrying forward his values and vision.
Paul III, a 2001 Memphis University School alumnus, now serves as vice president and senior client portfolio manager at Nuance Investments, LLC, bringing his father’s principles into modern finance.
John Marston, a 2004 graduate, is a dedicated public servant, representing Tennessee’s 97th District in the state legislature and previously supporting community development projects.
Stuart Johnston, a 2004 alumnus, leads Imogene Holdings, LLC, blending business acumen with a commitment to growth and innovation.
Trow’s sister, Grace “Gaye” Gillespie Henderson, along with her family, stands by him in remembrance.
He is survived by his parents, Dorothy Anderson Gillespie Pennepacker and Paul Trowbridge Gillespie, and his stepfather, Reverend Canon Wallace M. Pennepacker.
