Paul Stoecker, former head football coach at Cazenovia High School, departed this world at 90.
Born April 2, 1935, in Cazenovia, NY, to Francis and Emma Stoecker, he attended LeMoyne College before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Berlin Crisis and later in the Army Reserves.
His coaching journey began unexpectedly when Sam Volo noticed him at Lakeside Park, inviting him to lead the football program. Quickly becoming a pillar of the school, Paul taught physical education, wrestling, and girls’ track while coaching football for 43 years.
Community Mourns Loss of Beloved Coach
Paul Anthony Stoecker left behind his wife, Barb—met in 1966—and their three children: Heidi Wood, Amy Littman, and Jeff Stoecker. The couple also cherished six grandchildren: Matthew, Katie, Morgan, Peter, Max, and Gabe.
Colleagues and former students recall his legendary halftime speeches and steadfast commitment to student development. 'I’ll never forget his energy,' shared Steven Riedl, a former teammate. Mark Schwarz, a retired UPS driver, added, 'He taught us discipline beyond the field.'
Ron Peters of Syracuse University expressed sorrow: 'Such a kind man at 90—unbelievable loss.' Brian Gentile, former colleague, simply stated, 'So sorry for your grief.'
Memorial arrangements will take place in Cazenovia this spring. Instead of flowers, donations are accepted for Caz Cares or Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC).
Rest in peace, Coach Stoecker. Your legacy lives on.
