Respected Former Sports Coach Stuart Gottlieb Dies at 78

Stuart Gottlieb, a celebrated figure in athletics and mentorship, has left the Macon community with profound sorrow after his passing at 78 years old.

His remarkable journey included playing for the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, alongside a distinguished coaching career spanning decades.

The Macon area mourns deeply as his story of resilience and compassion comes to a close.

Born April 10, 1947, in Hollywood, California, to Irvin and Lillian Gottlieb, Stuart’s life was defined by perseverance and service. He excelled in football from Fairfax High School to the University of Colorado, eventually earning a spot with the Dallas Cowboys in the 10th round of the NFL draft.

His professional path extended to the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos before transitioning to roles as a counselor and educator, nurturing countless lives through group homes and coaching youth teams.

Family survives him: wife Robin Logan Gottlieb, sons Nolan and Tyler Gottlieb, daughter-in-law Maggie Nolan Gottlieb, grandson Beniah Gottlieb, and extended relatives. His son Tyler shared heartfelt reflections on social media, expressing gratitude for his father’s unwavering spirit despite recent challenges.

Early this morning, Dad’s journey came to an end. He was truly one of a kind, as anyone that knew Stu-Baby can attest. These last couple years have been tough ones, so I’m glad he no longer has to deal with those struggles physically. Miss you a ton already, dad… love you much.

Colleagues and friends offered tributes, including Matt Ozment recalling shared moments at sports events and Paul Gottlienb cherishing memories of high school games. The Gottlieb family welcomes condolences during this difficult time.
