The Tuscaloosa community mourns Rafael Pinedo, a beloved coach and Army veteran, who died at 51 on October 16, 2026, after battling stage 4 cancer.
Rafael Pinedo (Source: )Born March 27, 1974, in San Diego, Rafael’s passion for sports shaped his journey from Hilltop High School athlete to dedicated coach.
He moved to Tuscaloosa in 2026, becoming an assistant coach at Holy Spirit Catholic High School, where he mentored young athletes with unwavering care.
As an infantryman in the United States Army, Rafael served with honor, carrying his military pride as a symbol of commitment and resilience.
His personal life centered on family—raised with Duschka Castorena Pinedo, they shared 16 years of marriage, three children, and a legacy of love.
Rafael faced terminal cancer with grace, surrounded by family and those he inspired, embodying his motto: “On the Line Gentleman.”

After a year of health struggles, Rafael’s final days were marked by faith, family visits, and the joy of being surrounded by loved ones.
Duschka honored his memory by keeping their home open for farewells, reflecting Rafael’s belief that family is everything.
A tribute fund was established by Gabby Rubalcava to assist with funeral costs, aiming to ease the family’s burden during grief.
Rafael’s legacy thrived through his VA work, church involvement, and his infectious spirit—known for jokes, encouragement, and southern hospitality.
An avid sports fan, he rooted for the LA Chargers, Padres, and Alabama Crimson Tide, always shouting “Roll Tide!”
Community Tributes Pour In Following Rafael’s Passing
Emily Plunkett Ewart described Rafael as a devoted husband, father, and coach whose kindness made everyone feel like family.
Holy Spirit Catholic School shared a heartfelt note: “We will miss him deeply. Pray for his family.”

His funeral will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with invitations extended to honor his life.
