Two motorcyclists lost their lives in a devastating crash on June 27, 2026, on a state highway in Chicago's southwest suburbs.

The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Illinois Route 394 near Dyer Road, involving two motorcycles.

A 22-year-old rider from Crown Point, Indiana, Justin Fasnacht, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The 24-year-old rider, Sarah Gudeman from northwest Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Sarah (Hyska) Gudeman was a dedicated registered nurse and a former collegiate swimmer, competing for Bethel University’s swim team from 2019 until her passing.

Authorities reported that both riders were traveling north on Route 394 when Fasnacht collided with the rear of Gudeman’s motorcycle.

Family and Friends Grieve the Loss of Sarah Hyska Gudeman

Sarah Gudeman’s mother, Courtney Hyska, conveyed the profound anguish of losing her daughter abruptly.

She recounted how Sarah had been vibrant just days prior—married to her partner Kendon, thriving in her role as a registered nurse, and eagerly anticipating the future.

Sarah had a promising future ahead, leaving her family overwhelmed with sorrow.

Courtney and Jeff, her husband, expressed their heartache over losing their only daughter, grappling with the immense grief that followed.

In her memory, Courtney urged motorcyclists to reconsider the risks involved, highlighting the fatal outcome for both riders.

Our beautiful daughter became our reality on Monday, now gone. I can’t fathom a life without our precious girl. She had everything ahead—her job, marriage to the love of her life, a promising future. Tragedy struck in a split second. Please—if you ride, reconsider. Sarah and another rider perished. We’ll love you forever, Sarah Gudeman

Similarly, Meghan Powell, Sarah’s aunt, shared her struggle to articulate her sorrow.

Sarah was more than a relative; she was akin to a daughter, growing up nearby and forming a special bond with Meghan’s children.

Born just five days before Meghan’s youngest, Sarah was the sole granddaughter among six grandchildren, confidently holding her own among boys.

Her passion for riding evolved from Power Wheels as a child to dirt bikes, quads, and finally motorcycles.

The suddenness of her death at 24 has amplified the collective grief.

Meghan mourned not only Sarah’s life but the countless moments and milestones that will never materialize.

Even amidst her pain, she found solace in knowing Sarah embraced life fully and died doing what brought her joy.

My beautiful niece Sarah Gudeman, born five days before my youngest, grew up just down the road. As the only granddaughter among six grandchildren, she stood out, beloved by all. From camo and boots to sundresses and sandals, she radiated beauty. After graduating nursing school, she cherished her role as an ER nurse and her magical wedding to her partner ten months ago. A passionate rider since childhood, her life—and those who adored her—were cut short. I grieve for what might have been, for her family’s loss, and for the void left behind. Though I rage against the extinguishing of her light, I hold onto memories of her smiling at her parents’ driveway. I cherish the moments she lived fully, and I love you, Sarah—forever in my heart.

Rest in Peace, Sarah Gudeman!
