The close community of Duncan, South Carolina, is mourning the tragic death of 17-year-old athlete Kory Nathaniel Fredericks, who was killed in a shooting.

Kory, a beloved son, brother, and friend, was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 2:47 AM on Sunday, June 22, 2026, leaving behind a grieving family and a community struggling to make sense of the tragedy.

Kory was the cherished son of Scott Fredericks and Marguerite and the brother of Kayla Fredericks, with whom he shared a close bond.

Raised in Duncan, Kory was a standout student-athlete at Dorman High School, where he excelled in both track and field and varsity football.

At 5’11”, he was a skilled athlete with great energy, making him a strong player on the field and an inspiration to his teammates.

The Tragic Incident

According to authorities, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at Academy Sports + Outdoors, located at 100 Peachwood Center Drive, on the night of June 21, 2026.

Upon arrival, they found evidence of a shooting but no immediate victims at the scene. Shortly after, two individuals arrived at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, one of whom was Kory.

Despite emergency interventions, Kory succumbed to his injuries. The second victim remains critically ill, with their condition under medical supervision.

Chief Investigator Johnathan Lawson of the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed Kory’s passing, while Sheriff’s Office Lt. Graham McLellan emphasized that the investigation continues to determine circumstances surrounding the event.
