The death of Caiden McGuff leaves Camden High School and the local community in mourning.
A devastating car accident in Kershaw County claimed the life of 16-year-old Caiden Miles McGuff, a beloved student and rising baseball talent at Camden High School.
The single-vehicle crash around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2026, along Ridgeway Road near Richardson Boulevard, approximately four miles east of Elgin, South Carolina.
According to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, McGuff was driving a 2004 Ford pickup truck westbound when the vehicle veered off the left side of the road.
The truck struck a phone box, overturned, and crashed into a tree in the woods.
Both McGuff and his female passenger were transported by EMS to Kershaw Medical Center. McGuff later succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the passenger remains unknown.
Kershaw County Coroner David West officially identified McGuff and confirmed his death at the hospital.
He noted that McGuff was an active student-athlete at Camden High, participating in multiple sports but known best for his passion and talent in baseball.
Camden High School Principal Rose Montgomery expressed deep sorrow in a heartfelt statement:

McGuff’s death has left a significant void in the local sports community.
As a varsity pitcher, McGuff stood out for his skill and leadership. During the 2026 season, he posted a 7-3 record with a save in 13 appearances, struck out 28 batters in 33 innings, and held opposing hitters to a .234 batting average.
His performance earned him a nomination for The State’s Boys Spring Sports Athlete of the Week in April.

Caiden Miles McGuff is survived by his parents, Amanda Lynn Mossor McGuff and Matthew Ralph McGuff; his sister, Jenna McGuff; and his brothers, Austin, Justin, and Joseph McGuff.
He also leaves behind a large extended family, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom now mourn the loss of a young life full of promise.
A Celebration of Life for McGuff will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 3, 2026, at Malvern Hill Baptist Church in Camden.
The Rev. Dr. Craig Thompson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Camden High School Baseball Team.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
McGuff’s death marks one of the 11 fatal crashes in Kershaw County this year, part of a troubling trend across the state, which has already seen more than 480 traffic-related deaths in 2026.
