Legendary Baseball Mentor Edwin "Pete" Rhodes, 92, Departs Leaving Indelible Mark
After serving with distinction in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, Rhodes dedicated decades to fostering youth through baseball, ultimately coaching for over 15 years starting in 1970.
His commitment extended beyond the field—he founded Cape Travelers Baseball Team in 1970 and remained a guiding force in local athletics until his passing.
Enduring Impact Through Service
Beyond sports, Rhodes built Plaza Tire Service with brother Peewee, expanding it to 16 locations before retiring in 1986. A pillar of community organizations, he contributed 33 years as VFW Post 3838’s canteen manager and held roles in the American Legion and Elks Lodge.
Devoted Family Man
Survived by wife Carol Dewees Daniel, Rhodes leaves behind cherished memories with children Debbie Lynn and Eddie Ray. His marriage to Almaretta Hanson lasted 53 years until her 2009 passing, followed by union with Carol in 2012.
Colleagues remember him fondly—Rohit Maharjan notes his "exceptional storytelling ability," while local friends highlight his warmth and wisdom.
Funeral arrangements include visitation Oct 7 (4-8 PM) and service Oct 8 at 11 AM, with interment at Cape County Memorial Park followed by a luncheon at VFW Post 3838.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Cape Girardeau Veterans Home Foundation are encouraged.
