October 9, 2026 – The community of Elkton, Maryland, grieves the loss of Kevin Patrick McGroerty, a beloved coach and longtime figure at MOT Charter School, who passed away on October 8, 2026, at 71.

While details about his passing remain private, Kevin’s impact on generations of athletes endures through heartfelt memories and enduring lessons. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1954, Kevin built a legacy as a dedicated coach and technician, shaping young lives across multiple sports.

Served as a multi-sports coach at MOT Charter School, leading teams to numerous victories. His roles included assistant varsity softball and basketball coach, plus head junior varsity basketball coach.

MOT Charter School shared a poignant tribute on social media:

“Coach K was a cherished member of our Mustang family whose energy, encouragement, and unwavering support shaped the lives of countless student-athletes. Beyond wins and losses, his legacy lives in the confidence he built, the character he modeled, and the community he strengthened through kindness. He was a mentor, motivator, and friend.”

Kevin also officiated as a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, upholding fairness in every game. Professionally, he spent years as a lead technician at Northrop Grumman and lived passionately as an outdoorsman.

Survived by his wife Sheila J. Bower McGroerty (deceased 2017), son Daniel McGroerty, grandsons Hunter and Gene, and a vast network of family, friends, and community members.
