Renowned journalist Ron Bracken, a pillar of Centre County sports reporting, passed away at 81, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and a family deeply mourning his loss.

Ron Bracken, born November 6, 1943, in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania, dedicated his life to chronicling the triumphs and challenges of local sports, earning widespread recognition for his work.

After graduating from Penn State University, Bracken began his illustrious career with Centre Daily Times in 1964, rising from editorial assistant to becoming a celebrated sports editor and columnist.

Over 44 years, he covered high school athletics and Penn State sports, shaping the narrative of Centre County’s athletic community through his insightful reporting.

Though self-taught in journalism, Bracken’s dedication made him a symbol of integrity and passion in the field. He was inducted into seven halls of fame, including the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association’s Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

His accolades included 11 Keystone Press Awards and multiple state and regional honors, reflecting his commitment to excellence in sports journalism.

Bracken’s marriage to Joan Bracken, who passed away in 2016, was a testament to enduring love; they shared 50 years of partnership before her death at 68.

Surviving him is daughter Janine K. Barony, son-in-law Jim, and granddaughters Kayla Rae and Kylie Jo Barony, whose family cherishes his memory.

Janine shared fond recollections, highlighting her father’s resilience and determination, qualities that defined his career and personal life.
