Henagar, Alabama Resident and Ider High School Basketball Standout Noah Smothers, 14, Dies After Complications Related to Influenza

Fort Payne and Henagar, Alabama, communities are grieving the sudden loss of beloved son and standout student-athlete, Noah Robert "Smo" Smothers.
Noah Smothers passed away on Monday, December 29, 2026, at Erlanger Medical Center due to severe complications from influenza, at just 14 years old.
After seeking emergency care the day after Christmas for flu symptoms, Noah's condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to an urgent airlift to a children's hospital in Chattanooga.
Despite intensive medical intervention at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital, including ventilator support, cardiac fluid drainage, and dialysis preparations as his organs failed, Noah's life could not be saved.
The devastating passing of Noah Smothers has left his family, friends, and community in profound sorrow.
Born June 20, 2011, in Fort Payne, Alabama, Noah was cherished for his athletic talent and radiant personality within the local sports scene.
He graduated from Henagar Junior High School in 2026, where he captured hearts as a standout basketball player.

At Ider High School, Noah continued excelling academically and athletically as a freshman on the Ider Hornet basketball team.

Beyond the court, Noah was an active member of New Home Baptist Church, enriching spiritual life alongside family. He is survived by his parents Mark and Charlene Smothers, siblings Sarah and Will, grandmother Janice Womack, nephew Bryce Grizzard, and extended relatives.
His sister Sarah shared: "We've lost our sunshine, but his faith will guide us. Let's cherish memories and keep his spirit alive."
Family has scheduled a viewing at Corner Stone Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, December 31, 2026, at 3 PM CT, followed by burial at Liberty Cemetery.
