Farrell Youth Coach Brandon Smith Identified as Victim in Deadly Shooting Outside Yank’s Place

Brandon Smith, a 45-year-old football coach, was found unresponsive with gunshot wounds outside Yank’s Place on Idaho Avenue in Farrell, Pennsylvania.
The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. on Sunday, September 21, 2026. Despite urgent medical attention, he did not survive. The coroner later confirmed his death as a homicide.
Investigators soon uncovered a second crime scene on Wilson Road near Swamp Road, where Smith’s vehicle had been targeted. Additional vehicles in the vicinity also sustained damage.
Due to the severity of the case, the Farrell Police Department escalated the investigation to the Pennsylvania State Police.
Initially unidentified, Smith was later confirmed as Brandon Smith—a respected figure in the community. He was a former student of the Farrell Area School District, a dedicated youth football coach, and a devoted family man.
The school district released a poignant statement expressing profound sorrow over his passing, describing him as a “beloved coach” whose death was both tragic and senseless.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother, children, family, friends, and the students and community that he loved and served,” the statement emphasized.To support those affected, counselors from Mercer County Behavioral Health were deployed to the district.
Brandon Smith is remembered not only for his coaching legacy but also for his role as a loving father, son, and community pillar.

Born on January 18, 1980, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, to Karen Smith and the late Rudolph Wright, Smith spent his childhood in Farrell. He attended Farrell Area School District, excelling in football and basketball before graduating in 1999.
He later pursued business management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Kittanning Campus. Colleagues and community members praised his kindness, humor, and ability to uplift others.
As Head Coach for Farrell’s youth football programs, Smith inspired countless young athletes, fostering their growth with patience and encouragement.
He was a proud father of twelve children, including Brandon Smith Chambers, Kailynn Satterwhite, and others, as well as a grandfather to Brailyn and Nasir Waggoner.
Survived by his mother Karen Smith, siblings Lamont Hailstock, Sr., Marissa Venable, Josh Williams, and grandmother Alda D. Smith.
His family has scheduled a public viewing at Greater Morris Chapel AME Church on September 29, 2026, followed by a visitation the next day. The Celebration of Life service will commence at 11:00 a.m. on September 30, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Sharon, Pennsylvania.
His legacy endures through the lives he touched and the memories he created.
