The heartbreaking death of Lawrence Evans has deeply impacted the Palatka community. On January 5, 2026, authorities confirmed the 17-year-old suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Evans with a gunshot injury. UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville treated him, but he passed away around 12:30 a.m. January 4.
Witnesses reported a single gunshot wound, likely to the chest, though official confirmation remains pending.
Local teen Montravien Oxendine, also from Palatka, was present and later arrested for concealed weapon possession and evidence tampering. He remains detained at Volusia County's Juvenile Detention Center.
